Mobile Learning

In IDT 7170 Mobile Learning, I designed a mobile learning app based on new learning technology and theory. The process followed iterative phases from creating a low-fidelity prototype to an artifact that I carried through the evaluation process in IDT 8030 Master’s Project courses. I selected this mobile learning application (MLA) prototype because it exemplifies the design and the development stages that I experienced as I conceptualized, created and revised the mobile application.

The MLA is called Critical Thinking, and it was conceived as a solution to a learning need. After advising pre-med students, I discovered that their scores were low in the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) section of the MCAT (pre-med school test). To address this problem, I built the app and further developed it after initial feedback from my team. I added three other critical reading and reasoning components to the app to support other personas: Interview skills, understanding social media, and real-life problem solving.

The cyclical work of designing a MLA is not a one and done process. Instead, it is an iterative process completed in collaboration with a team. In the IDT 7170 Mobile Learning (ML) course, I discovered the value of the continuous refinement design process as I worked with others to improve my learning application. Before using the software Figma to design the MLA prototype, I created a proposal and presented it to receive feedback. Based on the critique, I created a low-fidelity and then a hi-fidelity wireframe and shared it with my team to get further feedback. This cycle was repeated with each draft through the final presentation.

The technology and theoretical learning gained from the ML course awakened me to the new frontiers for learning. Due to mobile learning affordance, one can learn anytime and anywhere if they have a phone and internet connection.  This awareness has changed the way I view learning.
